If you are a skilled computer user and wish to attempt recovery yourself there are utilities available; these usually examine the entire disk before recovery which may cause unnecessary use of a failing disk and cause further damage. If there are no mechanical problems (often indicated by 'clicking') then you can try either GetDataBack or R-Studio. Evaluation copies are free and should indicate whether files can be recovered. Remember it is best to install these on a second drive, NOT on the faulty drive.
